Shkodra — Albania in 30 Minutes
Shkodra is one of the oldest cities in the Balkans, sitting at the southern tip of Lake Skadar just across the Albanian border. The Sukobin/Muriqan crossing is 15 minutes south of Ulcinj and is Montenegro's quietest Albanian checkpoint — often cleared in under 20 minutes. The shift is immediate: different language, different currency (Albanian lek), different energy. The road to Shkodra is lined with unfinished concrete buildings, roadside watermelon vendors, and the occasional donkey cart sharing the lane with you.
Rozafa Castle dominates the approach — an Illyrian-era fortress on a dramatic hilltop overlooking the lake, the rivers, and the entire Shkodra plain. The legend says a woman was walled into the foundations as a sacrifice during construction, and her breast still protrudes from the stone so she could continue feeding her infant. Whether you believe the story or not, the views from the top are staggering.
What to See
- Rozafa Castle — climb the Illyrian fortress walls for panoramic views across Lake Skadar and the Albanian Alps in the distance
- The renovated pedestrian centre — Ottoman-era bazaar lanes, Italian-era boulevards, strong espresso in tiny cups, and bakeries selling hot byrek (Albanian savoury pastry)
- The Albanian shore of Lake Skadar — a completely different perspective on the lake, quieter and less visited than the Montenegrin side
Crossing at Sukobin
The Sukobin/Muriqan checkpoint is small and usually fast. Have your passport, rental contract, and Green Card ready. Wait times are typically under 20 minutes. On the Albanian side, the road improves significantly once you reach the Shkodra bypass. Bring some lek or withdraw from ATMs in Shkodra — euros are accepted informally but at poor rates.
Getting There
Drive south from Ulcinj through Krute toward the Albanian border at Sukobin. After clearing the checkpoint, follow the main road to Shkodra — total driving time is 30-40 minutes. The drive back is the same route. Allow a full day for a comfortable visit including the castle, lunch in the pedestrian zone, and a walk along the lake.
