Ada Bojana: Driving to Montenegro's River-Mouth Island

A triangular island where the Bojana River meets the Adriatic — sandy beaches, river-fish restaurants, and some of Europe's best kitesurfing.

An Island Between River and Sea

Ada Bojana is a triangular island formed by two branches of the Bojana River just before it empties into the Adriatic. The island covers roughly 5 square kilometres of flat, sandy terrain fringed by beaches on all three sides. The seaward beach faces south-west and catches the same thermal winds that make Velika Plaza a kitesurfing destination. The river beaches are calmer — warm, shallow water with a gentle current.

For decades Ada Bojana was one of Europe's most famous naturist resorts. The hotel complex has long since closed, but the island's character remains: low-key, slightly wild, and unlike anywhere else on the Montenegrin coast. River-fish restaurants on wooden stilts line the northern bank, and the southern beach stretches uninterrupted to the Albanian border.

Driving to Ada Bojana

From Ulcinj, follow the coastal road south toward Velika Plaza. After about 12 km you reach the Ada Bojana bridge — a single-lane concrete structure that crosses the southern branch of the Bojana. There is a toll booth on the mainland side. The fee is €3 per car (cash only, exact change appreciated). Once across, a sandy track leads to the main beach and the riverside restaurants.

The road on the island is unpaved. Any car can manage it in dry conditions, but after heavy rain the tracks become soft. A higher-clearance vehicle is more comfortable. The island is also just a few kilometres from the Albanian border — if you are planning a day trip to Shkodra, read our guide on crossing into Albania from Ulcinj before you go.

The Beaches

The sea-facing beach on the south side is around 3 km long — fine sand, shallow entry, and usually uncrowded even in peak season. The river beaches on the north and east sides are sheltered from wind and warmer than the open sea. Families with young children tend to prefer the river side. There are no sun lounger operations on the island — bring everything you need.

River-Fish Restaurants

The stilt restaurants along the Bojana's northern channel serve freshwater fish pulled from the river that morning — carp, eel, and trout, grilled whole over open fires and served with blitva (chard) and potatoes. These are some of the most distinctive meals you can eat in Montenegro. Prices are moderate — expect €10–15 per person for a full fish meal with wine. Wind and Kitesurfing

Ada Bojana's seaward beach picks up the same south-westerly thermals as the southern end of Velika Plaza, but the island's flat terrain and lack of buildings create an even more consistent wind corridor. The river mouth also offers flat-water riding — rare on the Adriatic coast. Two kite schools operate from the beach between May and September. Board and kite hire runs around €60–80 per day.

Practical Tips

  • Bridge toll: €3 per car, cash only. The bridge is single-lane — wait for oncoming traffic to clear before crossing.
  • Car type: Any car in dry weather. Higher clearance recommended after rain — the island tracks are unpaved sand.
  • Cash: The restaurants and beach operations on the island are cash-only. Bring euros.
  • Mosquitoes: The river delta breeds mosquitoes from June onwards. Bring repellent, especially for evening dining on the stilt platforms.
