Why Cross from Ulcinj?
Ulcinj is the closest Montenegrin town to the Albanian border. The Sukobin/Muriqan crossing is just 20 minutes south of the town centre — closer than most visitors expect. The road drops through olive groves and farmland before reaching the checkpoint on the banks of the Bojana River. On the other side, the Albanian city of Shkodra is a further 30–40 minutes drive.
The crossing itself is straightforward. Queues are short outside of July and August weekends. Both sides have modern border facilities. The whole process — Montenegrin exit stamp, Albanian entry stamp, vehicle document check — typically takes 10–15 minutes in each direction.
At the Border
You will need your passport, driving licence, vehicle registration document, and a Green Card (international motor insurance certificate). The Green Card proves that your rental car's insurance is valid in Albania. Without it, you will be turned back or required to purchase Albanian third-party insurance at the border — a process that adds time and cost.
If you are renting through us, tell us at booking that you plan to cross into Albania and we will ensure the Green Card is in the glovebox. For full details on cross-border requirements, see our border crossing guide which covers all six countries you can drive to from Montenegro.

Shkodra: The First Albanian City
Shkodra sits at the southern tip of Lake Skadar (Lake Shkodra on the Albanian side). The Rozafa Castle dominates the city from a hilltop — a fortress with Illyrian foundations and views across the lake to the mountains. The old bazaar district below is compact and walkable, with cafes, artisan shops, and a handful of Ottoman-era buildings. Allow 2–3 hours to explore the castle and the town centre.
Green Card and Insurance
The Green Card is a standardised document recognised across Europe and its near neighbours. It extends your vehicle's third-party insurance to cover the country you are entering. For Albania, it is mandatory. If you forget to arrange it in advance, some rental companies charge a surcharge to issue one at the last minute. Others do not offer Albania coverage at all. Confirm before you book. The border is also close to Ada Bojana — some visitors combine the island with an Albania day trip on the same day.
Suggested Day Trip
Leave Ulcinj at 9am. Cross at Sukobin (allow 15 min for the border). Drive to Shkodra (30 min). Visit Rozafa Castle and walk the old town. Lunch at a lakeside restaurant — grilled trout and raki. Return via the same crossing. You will be back in Ulcinj by mid-afternoon with time for a swim at Velika Plaza before sunset.
Practical Tips
- Documents: Passport, driving licence, vehicle registration, Green Card. Photocopies are not accepted.
- Currency: Albania uses the lek. Euros are widely accepted in Shkodra but at poor exchange rates. ATMs are available in the city centre.
- Fuel: Fill up in Ulcinj before crossing. Albanian fuel is cheaper but station quality varies. The return trip is under 150 km total.
- Return timing: Avoid crossing back into Montenegro after 6pm on Fridays in summer — queues build at the Montenegrin entry point.
