The diesel torque and 8-speed auto eat the climb over Sozina on the Podgorica approach and the adaptive cruise keeps the coastal run to Budva honest in slow Bar truck traffic. i-Cockpit suits tall drivers who want to look over rather than through the steering wheel.

The Peugeot 308 on Ulcinj roads

Behind the wheel

The 308 Mk3 is the adult French mid-size and the calm, long-distance pick of the Ulcinj fleet. The 1.5 BlueHDi 130 diesel is the common spec and the right match for the Ulcinj rental profile: torque from 1,750 rpm, a six-speed manual that is light and precise, or an eight-speed EAT auto that shuffles ratios almost invisibly. The 1.2 PureTech 130 petrol is livelier at the top but works harder on the sustained climb over Sozina. Inside, the i-Cockpit scales up well — you look over the small steering wheel at digital instruments, the cabin noise floor at 130 km/h is genuinely low, and the driving position flatters tall drivers who never quite settled in the 208.

On Ulcinj roads

On the long Ulcinj routes the 308 finds its rhythm. The coastal push up through Bar, Petrovac and Budva toward Tivat Airport is effortless — the diesel settles at 1,800 rpm in top, the adaptive cruise handles the slow truck traffic through Sutomore without drama, and the economy gauge sits under 4.5 L/100 km with cruise set at 110. The Sukobin border crossing into Albania is the other natural use case; Ulcinj to Shkodër in 45 minutes with the pre-arranged Green Card, overtakes handled in sixth gear without a downshift, the cabin no noisier than it is at 60. The old-town ring above Kalaja is the only place the 4,367 mm length counts against you.

Space and load

The 412-litre boot is a proper family size — square corners, low load lip, a usefully flat shape seats-up. Three large cases and two cabin bags fit without stacking; fold the rear bench for 1,323 litres and a Durmitor hiking trip for four travels from an Ulcinj base with 50-litre packs, boots and poles, with room for a cool-box. Four-up beach gear for a long Velika Plaža day — chairs, parasol, cool-bag, snorkels — fits seats-up without rearranging. Cross-border weekend luggage for four doing a Shkodër run with smart outfits arrives uncreased. For a hatch this is genuinely spacious.

Best journeys for this car

The 308 suits the family of four whose Ulcinj week is really a regional tour — three nights in town, two in Budva, two in Kotor, one across the Bojana bridge in Shkodër — and the brief is one car that covers every leg with the same calm. It also works for business travellers on an Ulcinj–Podgorica–Bar circuit who value a quiet cabin on the Sozina motorway. Returning customers who drove a Clio last time and wanted more boot space on the airport return leg are its natural audience. It is more car than a couple on a Mala Plaža-only week needs, and the length counts against it in the tightest old-town streets near Kalaja.

Practical notes

Diesel economy is genuinely impressive — 4.4 L/100 km at 120 km/h, closer to 5.0 in mixed driving — and a 52-litre tank pushes past 1,000 km between fills. Along the Ulcinj–Bar coastal road refills are frequent; inland spurs thin out after Vladimir, so tank up before a Šasko Lake or Podgorica push. Parking is fine in the Pristan paid lots and the residential grid behind the bus station takes the 4.37 m length with care; the tightest old-town bays near Mala Plaža and the angled spots at Kalaja's gates are workable but ask for patient manoeuvres. Summer AC with rear vents is a real quality-of-life advantage in 35–38°C Ulcinj afternoons with four on board — the rear passengers notice the difference.

The verdict

Pick the 308 when the Ulcinj trip mixes distance, family kit and cross-border runs and you want one calm car for all of it. Skip it if your week is anchored in the old town and two-up — a Clio or a Fiat 500 does the same routine a size smaller.
