The extra ride height handles the unpaved service roads between Velika Plaža access points and the rougher approach to Ada Bojana. Front-wheel drive only — pick this over a hatch for loose surfaces, not over a proper 4x4 for winter trips inland.

The Kia Stonic on Ulcinj roads

Behind the wheel

The Stonic is Kia's small crossover — a raised hatch on a Rio platform with about 40 mm of extra ride height and a slightly chunkier stance. The 1.0 T-GDi three-cylinder petrol is the standard engine at 100 hp, paired most often with a six-speed manual. It is neither exciting nor refined; it is pragmatic. The driving position is taller than a Polo but not so high that urban parking becomes awkward. The cabin is built to a price — hard plastics up top, soft where your elbow lands — but well assembled. For south-coast rental use, where ride height matters more than brand prestige, it is a sensible compromise.

On Ulcinj roads

Ulcinj is where the extra ground clearance earns its keep. The service roads onto Velika Plaža are patched rather than broken, but the last two kilometres to the Ada Bojana kite schools include loose surface and occasional ruts that test a low hatch — the Stonic clears them without drama. The rough approach to the Valdanos olive grove camp is the same story. On the open coast road the Stonic is perfectly composed at 100 km/h, and it handles the climb to Kalaja without apology. The B-road up through Vladimir toward Šasko Lake shows the engine's modest power output on sustained gradients but it never actually runs out.

Space and load

The 352-litre boot is competitive for the class and genuinely useful — the shape is square with a flat load floor, and the seats fold almost flat to give 1,155 litres. This is the smallest car in the Ulcinj fleet that can take a pair of kite boards, bar bag and harnesses in the boot without putting gear on the back seat. Beach kit for four to Velika Plaža fits easily; camping equipment for a Šasko Lake overnight loads without trouble. It is not a full-size family wagon, but for two adults and a genuine quantity of outdoor gear it is comfortably the right pick.

The last kilometres onto Ada Bojana — loose surface, ruts, and the Stonic’s ride height making short work of it.

Best journeys for this car

The Stonic belongs to travellers whose Ulcinj week includes more than lying on Mala Plaža. Kitesurfers driving daily to Ada Bojana with their own gear; a couple doing the inland loop to Šasko Lake and on into Albania via Sukobin; a pair of hikers basing themselves in Ulcinj and driving out to Valdanos, Sas fortress, and up to Rumija on different days. It is also a defensible choice for renters nervous about south-coast road surfaces — the extra ride height is genuine insurance on the unpaved service tracks around Velika Plaža and Ada Bojana.

Practical notes

Real-world petrol economy is 5.5 to 6.0 L/100 km depending on wind and load, and the 45-litre tank gives a reliable 750 km of range. Parking at 4,140 mm is still easy in Ulcinj's old-town bays and the kerb-side approach to Mala Plaža. Front-wheel drive only — this is a crossover for rough surfaces, not a proper 4x4 for winter mountain runs, so do not pick it over a Renegade or Duster equivalent for a January trip inland to Kolašin. Summer AC is strong and the large glasshouse keeps the cabin cool faster than the smaller-window rivals manage.

The verdict

Pick the Stonic when your Ulcinj week includes kitesurfing gear, unpaved approaches, or a bit of both. Skip it if your driving is strictly town-to-beach and any small hatch would do the same work for less money.
