Tivat — Porto Montenegro and the Bay Gateway
Tivat sits on the Bay of Kotor, roughly 1.5 to 2 hours north of Ulcinj via the coastal road. The town is home to Porto Montenegro, a luxury superyacht marina that has transformed this once-quiet bay town into one of the Adriatic's most fashionable destinations.
The town is compact: a 2 km waterfront promenade connects the ferry pier to the Porto Montenegro marina. Most restaurants, shops, and cafes line this strip. Tivat Airport sits just across the road from town, making it the most convenient arrival point for the Bay of Kotor.
Beaches Near Tivat
Tivat's 17 beaches span 3 km of bay coastline. The water is calmer than the open Adriatic. Top picks:
- Plavi Horizonri (Blue Horizons) — white sand, shallow entry, ideal for families. Located 2 km south of the marina.
- Lustica Bay resort — 10 minutes south of town on the Lustica peninsula. Managed beach clubs with lounger rental, plus the Chedi hotel.
Porto Montenegro
The marina berths 450+ vessels including superyachts up to 250 metres. The waterfront village has boutiques, restaurants, the Regent hotel, and a pool club. Regular events (regattas, food festivals) run through summer.
Beyond the Waterfront
Prevlaka Peninsula
A 10-minute drive south of Porto Montenegro brings you to the ruins of the 10th-century St. Michael Archangel Monastery among olive trees. The peninsula has a quiet pebble beach facing the open bay.
Gornja Lastva
A hillside village 3 km above Tivat, reached by a narrow switchback road. Stone houses, an old church, and panoramic views over the entire bay.
For maritime history, drive through the Vrmac tunnel to the Kotor Maritime Museum inside the Old Town walls — a comfortable half-day trip from Tivat.
