Ulcinj to Perast Car Hire

A baroque waterfront village on the Bay of Kotor — about 2 hours from Ulcinj.

Perast — Baroque Village on the Bay of Kotor

Perast sits on the bay road between Kotor and Risan, about 2 hours from Ulcinj via the coastal route. This tiny village of 350 residents was once a major shipbuilding centre under the Republic of Venice, and its waterfront is lined with grand baroque palaces, a tall bell tower, and stone quays.

Parking in Perast is limited to a small lot at the north end of the village and roadside spaces along the approach. In summer, arrive before 9 am or after 5 pm to find a spot. The village itself has no car traffic — just a single waterfront promenade.

The Two Islands

St. George (Sveti Djordje)

A natural island 200 metres offshore, recognisable by its tall dark cypresses and 12th-century Benedictine monastery. The island is closed to visitors, but boats circle it for photographs. Best seen in early morning when the bay is flat.

Our Lady of the Rocks (Gospa od Skrpjela)

A man-made island built by locals throwing rocks and sinking old boats over centuries. The tradition continues every July 22nd during the Fasinada festival. Taxi boats from Perast run every 15 minutes in season — about 5 EUR return. The church inside holds votive paintings by Boka sailors.

Walking Through Perast

The village has no traffic — just one paved promenade along the water. Walk south to north in 10 minutes, passing stone palaces, the St. Nicholas bell tower, and waterfront cafes with bay views. The Perast Museum in the Buiovic Palace documents the town's maritime history.

Banja Monastery

Continue north past Perast toward Risan for 2 km to reach the Banja Monastery. It holds religious artefacts from Russian, Greek, and local Boka dynasties. Usually open mornings only.
