The EDC auto and diesel torque make short work of the inland climb over Sozina on the Podgorica run, and the long-travel damping smothers the broken edges on the service road to Velika Plaža. Rear vents matter on a four-up Ada Bojana day in August.
The Renault Megane on Ulcinj roads
Behind the wheel
The Megane on LocalRent stock in Montenegro is the fourth-generation car — a conventional C-segment hatch rather than the narrow E-Tech crossover that has replaced it new. The 1.5 Blue dCi 115 diesel is the distance-eating spec and the one most Ulcinj-based renters want; the 1.3 TCe 140 petrol is the urban-weighted alternative. Both are available with the EDC dual-clutch auto, which is the better match for the Ulcinj stop-start rhythm along the Pristan promenade and the slow Bar truck traffic northbound. The cabin is quieter at 130 km/h than the comparable 308 by a useful margin, and the seats flatter a long drive in a way small-car seats never will.
On Ulcinj roads
Ulcinj rewards the Megane's damping. The service roads onto Velika Plaža are patched rather than broken, and the Megane soaks them up at 60 km/h with the cabin serenely undisturbed — something the firmer 308 cannot quite match. The Sozina motorway push toward Podgorica is the Megane's natural home: cruise at 120 with the diesel loafing at 1,700 rpm, the economy read-out sitting under 4.5 L/100 km, overtakes handled in eighth gear without a downshift. The limit is the old-town ring above Kalaja, where the 4,360 mm length asks more of tight two-point turns than a hatch a class down would. On everything else it is the calmest car in the Ulcinj fleet.
Space and load
The 434-litre boot is the largest in the small and mid-size fleet and the shape earns its place on the spec sheet. Three large cases and two cabin bags fit flat with a day-bag on top; fold the 60:40 bench and 1,247 litres open up, enough for a Šasko Lake camping overnight or a pair of kitesurfing bags and harnesses for Ada Bojana. Four-up beach gear for a full Velika Plaža day loads seats-up without drama. Wedding-ceremony outfits for a coastal reception arrive uncreased across the rear bench. This is the car you choose when luggage volume is a genuine constraint, not a size-up-in-case impulse.

Best journeys for this car
The Megane is the family-first and airport-transfer pick. Four travellers arriving at Podgorica Airport with a week's luggage and a pushchair-age child who want one diesel that handles the 90-minute southbound transfer without complaint, then parks outside their Ulcinj apartment for a week, then covers the return. Two couples splitting one car on a ten-day coastal loop — three nights in Ulcinj, three in Budva, three in Kotor — and choosing the boot space over the brand. The business visitor on a three-day Ulcinj–Podgorica–Bar circuit who values a quiet cabin on the motorway legs. It is more car than a solo traveller anchored at Mala Plaža needs.
Practical notes
Diesel economy is genuinely impressive — 4.3 L/100 km at a steady 120 km/h, closer to 5.0 in Ulcinj's stop-start — and the 50-litre tank pushes past 1,100 km in gentle use. Refills on the coast road are frequent until Bar; past Sutomore they thin out on inland spurs, so a Šasko Lake run wants a full tank. Parking at 4.36 m is workable in the Pristan paid lots and the bigger Ulcinj new-town bays; the tightest old-town squeeze near Mala Plaža asks more of you than a Clio would. Summer AC with rear vents is strong enough for four-up Ada Bojana runs in August, and the rear passengers notice the difference. Chains legally required on inland passes November–March if the week extends past Podgorica.
The verdict
Pick the Megane when the brief is family kit, long-distance calm and a boot that actually fits the holiday. Skip it if your Ulcinj week is a marina-style two-up routine or if the ring-road parking in the old town above Kalaja is a daily concern.
